The Golden Face Ratio: Understanding and Achieving Facial Harmony

We all know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what if there was a way to measure it? The answer lies in the Golden Ratio, also known as Phi or Fibonacci number. This ratio has been used by some to determine physical attractiveness. It can seem unfair for those who are not born with features that naturally fit this formula.

Thankfully, Cienna Aesthetics can help! We’re a boutique medical aesthetic clinic and we use it as a guide when performing our non-invasive treatments to enhance facial features and give our patients their desired results.

What is the Golden Ratio theory?

The Golden Ratio Theory is an idea that advocates achieving and appreciating beauty through equilibrium and ratios. Two numbers are said to be in the golden ratio if they have a proportion equal to the quotient of their sum with the greater among them (a+b : a).

This theory is often used for aesthetic beauty procedures, nose surgery, and other non-surgical treatments for acne, lip proportion and width, facial measurements, and general attractiveness. All this goes to show that the Theory can be used for so much more than just creating beautiful looks.

You can find this perfect ratio scattered throughout nature’s creations—ferns, flowers, seashells, even hurricanes—which is why we may be instinctively attracted to natural forms.

In fact, research has unveiled that it seems to be an innate preference embedded in our brains, and that even minor alterations which bring a picture nearer to the Golden Ratio produce a notable effect.

European Renaissance artists, like Botticelli and Leonardo Da Vinci, notably worked with this divine proportion while crafting iconic artworks such as the Birth of Venus and the Mona Lisa.

Beside this, the golden ratio has been also employed in treatments like, non-surgical nose aesthetics, injections, and more. This is why we measure face widths and other characteristics to guarantee the most favorable treatment outcomes.

So, how is golden ratio applied to facial aesthetics?

The application of the Golden Ratio in facial aesthetics involves achieving proportions of 1:1.618. Here are some key aspects to consider:

  • For a visually balanced face, the length should be approximately 1.5 times greater than the width.
  • The distance from the top of the nose to the center of the lips should ideally be 1.618 times the distance from the center of the lips to the chin.
  • The distance from the hairline to the upper eyelid should be 1.618 times the length from the top of the upper eyebrow to the lower eyelid. This relationship has long been recognized for its aesthetic significance.
  • The ideal lip volume ratio is 1:1.6, with the lower lip having slightly greater volume than the upper lip.
  • The length of an ear should be proportionate to the length of the nose, ensuring a harmonious balance in facial features.
  • The width of an eye should be approximately equal to the distance between the eyes.

These procedures are utilised to enhance and define facial characteristics, ultimately creating a sense of beauty.

The golden ratio serves as a valuable guide for defining beauty

However, it is important to know that multiple factors contribute to our perception of beauty, such as cultural, symmetry and personal preference. Furthermore, each of us is inherently unique, and while we may not align perfectly with mathematical perfection, it is this individuality that shapes our identity.

We use the Golden Ratio at Cienna to enhance beauty and bring out the best in our patients through safe, efficient, and non-surgical aesthetic treatments.

It is also beneficial for treating ageing signs that may have caused volume loss or a hollow appearance on our face.

For instance, certain face features like the space between nose and mouth, along with the width of nose and mouth, tend to increase in size over time.

Therefore, even those faces that once appeared proportionally symmetrical are likely to stray from the Golden Ratio throughout ageing.

Here are some of the procedures we use to correct and prevent visual asymmetry:

For the face and chin

Ultherapy | Non-Surgical Facelift Treatment in Singapore | Cienna Aesthetics Medical Clinic

Along with minimising the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, Botulinum Toxin can also be used for jaw slimming.

Depending on the areas of injection, it can also result in general facelifting.

ULTRACEL Q+ High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

This natural alternative to surgical facelifts can reduce visage fats while tightening the skin.

For the nose

Nose Thread Lift

A minimally invasive procedure to sculpt the bridge of the nose, a threadlift procedure uses absorbable PDO thread for a more well-defined and protruding appearance and a 3D look.

For the lips

Fotona Liplase Laser

This non-invasive laser is designed to enhance the lips by stimulating collagen production.

Lip Filler

Injections known as lip fillers make the lips look fuller and plumper. The minimally invasive lip filler procedure only takes a few minutes yet lasts 2-4 years.

Furthermore, if you pick hyaluronic acid fillers, you can dissolve them if you are unhappy with the look.

Achieve a Golden Ratio face with Cienna Aesthetics Medical Clinic

At Cienna, we understand that the Golden Ratio is not the be-all and end-all of beauty. We use it to restore balance and proportionality—adding volume where necessary and subtly altering the apparent width between certain visage traits in order to improve overall facial harmony and attractiveness.

When we perform a treatment, we never look at just one facial feature in isolation. We consider how making any alteration to the face, nose, body or skin can affect a person’s appearance and balance the Golden Ratio with their unique good looks and visual appeal.

Let our doctor help you get closer to the divine proportion through procedures such as injections, non-surgical procedures and more.
